WSUS is a Windows Server role that can be obtained from Windows Server Operational Tools. It provides a single point of contact for Windows updates across an organization. WSUS allows companies not only to defer payments for updates, but also to selectively opt-in to them when they are selected for delivery, as well as to determine which individual devices or trainers and groups of devices they receive. WSUS provides additional control over enterprise-specific update windows, but lacks many of the scheduling and deployment timing options offered by Microsoft Endpoint Manager.

If you selected WSUS as the sourceFor many Windows updates, use your Group Policy to direct Windows client devices that support the WSUS server for your updates. From there, updates are regularly delivered to the WSUS server, managed, and approved and deployed through the WSUS administrative console or Group Policy, improving enterprise-wide update management. If you’re actively using WSUS to manage Windows Add-ons in your environment, you can continue to work on this in Windows 11.

    Windows Client Requirements With WSUS

To use WSUS, which manages and delivers Windows feature updates, you must use a supported version of WSUS:

  • WSUS 10.0.14393 B (Windows Server 2016 role)
  • WSUS 10.0.17763 B (Windows Server 2019 role)
  • WSUS 6.2 and 6.3 (role present in Windows 2012 Server and Windows Next Server R2)
  • KB 3095113 and KB 3159706 (or equivalent update) should always be installed on WSUS 6.2 from 6.3.
  • WSUS Scalability

How do I create a GPO for WSUS?

Open Playstation Group Policy Management and open an existing GPO, possibly create a new one. Navigation – Computer Configuration, Policies, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Update. Double click “Set up automatic updates” and set it to “Enabled”, maybe adjust the update options and tick “OK”.

In order to use WSUS to manage all Windows updates, some organizations may need to access WSUS from the marketplace, perimeter, or other complex scenario. WSUS is highly scalable and configurable for organizations of any site size or configuration. For specific information about scaling including wsus, configuring upstream and downstream servers, branch offices, WSUS load balancing, and other advanced scenarios, see Selecting a WSUS Deployment Type.

  • If you are using WSUS to manage updates on Windows client devices, first configure the “Configure Automatic Updates” and “Microsoft Intranet Update Service Location” Group Policy settings for your individual environment. This forces affected clients to contact the WSUS computer so that it can handle everything. The following process describes how to set these options and deploy people to all devices in a given domain.

How to configure the Group Policy settings for automatic updates and therefore the Group Policy settings for the Microsoft intranet update service for your environment

    1. Open the Group Policy Management Console (gpmc.msc).

    2. Expand ForestDomainsYour_Domain.

    3. Right-click Your_Domain, then select Create GPO in this domain and link here too.

Where is Group Policy for Windows updates?

In the Group Policy Management Editor, Windows Update policies related to computer-based configuration are located at Policy Name > Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Formula > Windows Update.

      Note

In this example, the “Automatically change updates” and “Intranet Microsoft Update Service Location” Group Policy settings are required for the entire domain. This may not be a requirement; You can define these settings for each security range using security filtering or for a specific organizational unit.

    4. In the New GPO dialog box, name the new GPO “WSUS – Intranet Auto Update Location and Update Service”.

      Note

There are three more options for downloading developed updates, as well as the installation date and time. This is exactly the possibility that this example uses. For ideas on how to manage automatic execution of other policies and related policies, see Configuring Automatic Updates Using Group Policy.

    10. Right-click the Specify location optionClick for Microsoft intranet updates and select Edit.

    11. In the Specify Internal Location for Microsoft Update Support dialog box, select Enable.

    12. In the “Set Intranet Services Options for New Start to Detect Updates and Configure Intranet Statistics Server Options” section, enter http://Your_WSUS_FQDN:PortNumber, then click OK.

      Note

URL http://CONTOSO-WSUS1.contoso.In com:8530 The following image is usually just an example. Be sure to specify the hosting port number and name for your own WSUS instance in the settings.

      Note

The default HTTP port associated with WSUS is 8530, the default HTTP port over Secure Sockets Layer (HTTPS) is 8531. (Other numbers are 80 and 443; other ports are not supported.)

When Windows clients update policies on their computers (the default Group Policy refresh rate is 90 times and on computer restarts), the startup of the technology appears in WSUS. Now that clients are communicating with my WSUS server, create computer clusters that match yours with the rings of use.

Creating Computer Groups In The WSUS Administration Console

You can use Marketplace Computer Groups to target a subset of these products with specific quality and feature enhancements. They represent groups of your WSUS controlled deployment environments. You have the option to populate both groups manually when using the WSUS Administrator Console, or possibly automatically through Group Policy. Whichever method you choose, first create the groups, I would say in the WSUS admin console.
